Style Profile...Sutton Schuler

NAME:
Sutton Schuler

PROFESSION:
I recently became the creative director and manager of an e-commerce site for a local NYC boutique. I also own “found by Sutton”, a simple pop-up shop loaded with vintage jewelry finds and other random treasures.

You recently moved to New York City. How would you compare the Denver fashion scene to New York’s; the good, the bad, the ugly?
Moving to NYC equaled the total liberation of my closet, allowing me to truly wear whatever, wherever. Although Denver’s style isn’t archaic it can often look bland as it is styled for practicality’s sake, snow in the morning and 70 degrees by 3pm. And when you add in the relaxed Colorado attitude the result is one that was quite different from my personal style. But in NYC really anything goes, a place where women, and men will walk for miles in 5” heels.

Myself being artistically challenged, I always turned to clothing for my medium of choice, and therefore I respect and enjoy a unique look. Some city dwellers choices are slightly bizarre, but my biggest gripe is that many New Yorkers are so desperate to be “different” they end up all looking the same. Depending on the neighborhood you will soon notice a uniform, whether it is Williamsburg’s hipster flare, or the Lower East Side where everyone is in slouchy shades of olive, nude, and black, they are all the same, stylish none the less.

In the end, New York is a judgment free area where you are allowed to wear the ensembles you love out of the editorials, where Colorado requires you to take into account the fact that everyone else will be in jeans & a flannel. I dress the same now as I did back home, but with a fewer weird looks!

It seems like everyone has a fashion blog these days. Why did you start bySutton.net? What is it about bySutton that sets you apart from the others?
Everyone! At times I wonder why am I doing this, especially when everywhere I turn in my neighborhood of Williamsburg it seems that there is a girl or boy posing for a personal style shot. But at the end of the day my true heart revolves around clothes, style, design, and cooking, so naturally bySutton became the picture book that accompanies my life. It started a year ago as a way to fill a creative void I had noticed in my life. The result was a site that was updated daily with fresh looks, recipes, and design ideas. Yes, there are lots of sites that have similar content, and I love them, but I like to think that bySutton is attainable and approachable.

How would you describe your personal style?
I ask myself this question everyday! I think my style is a modern take on the classics. I hate looking back and wondering why I wore that, and as long as I keep the lines flattering and timeless the result is generally successful. However, I am continually drawn to Navajo inspired jewelry, classic aviator sunglasses, fur hats, equestrian boots, fresh skin with simply lined eyes, olive green, and navy!

“I never break this fashion rule...”
Wearing the wrong undergarment. Other than that I think anything can go, within reason.

“I feel best wearing...”
Currently I am loving my olive green skinny cargo jeans from Current/Elliott when paired with a Nickolas K tuxedo shirt, and long black vest. And lots of sparkles, vintage or handmade of course.

What fashion magazines/blogs do you love?
Reading actual printed publications has forever been an exciting experience, and one that I hope will always be a luxury, even though I am on the side of digital media. I am a faithful reader of Vogue (girl crush on Anna Wintour, I moved all of my back logs from CO), Wallpaper Magazine, NY Times (read three newspapers a day), USA Today, and the Telluride Daily Planet. As far as online sources I simply cant get enough of Luxirare, Atlantis Home, Garance Dore, Karlas Closet, P.S. – I made this…, What I Wore, Jak & Jil, White Lightning, and The Glamourai.

Most treasured item in your closet?
A vintage fur cape from Lloyd’s Furs in Denver, it was my great grandmothers and it still has her initials embroidered on the inside. Beyond that I am most attached to a vintage Navajo cuff inherited from my grandfather along with the gold charm bracelet I received from my grandmother. There is something really special about these pieces, and I feel my loved ones energy every time I wear them… so I generally never go without one of them!

Style icons? Favorite Designers? My style is strongly influenced by the street captures of Scott Schuman, and I find myself continually going to his site when in a what to wear crisis. Other style crushes include Carey Mulligan, Michelle Lamy, Anne Boleyn, Kate Hudson, Anna dello Russo, and Tilda Swinton.

As far as designers, oh boy. I would say that I have more Annelore pieces than any other designer, right behind Missoni, but Julianna Cho of Annalore is a favorite of mine, and a best kept secret! Other drool worthy labels would have to be Celine, Balenciaga, Miuccia Prada, Elizabeth & James, Proenza Schouler, and Ann Demeulemeester.

Most stylish films/movies?
I could go on forever, but these have directly changed how I look at fashion: Annie Hall, Almost Famous, Bonnie & Clyde, A Single Man, Clueless, and Blow.

Favorite place to search for inspiration?
I find inspiration everywhere ~ Im always looking around, taking mental pictures (semi-photography memory helps) of landscapes, bizarre uniformity that takes place in a random world, and design books.  I have been known to spend hours in a book shop, and I am the only 20-something I know with an active library card.  Checking out oversized art and history books are my favorite!!

How do you spend your weekends?
Since moving to NYC my weekends are devoted to exploring. It is easy to find some favorites, but when living in a city like this I want to find all the hidden gems. Trying new restaurants, shopping in new areas, and searching the fleas.

Best fashion advice (either to give or received)?
I always tell people to only wear outfits that they feel beautiful and confident in. Whether that happens to be jeans and a tee, or a ball gown, as long as the fit is flattering and you cant help but smile you will be golden!

What are you wearing?
I am wearing a Marc Jacobs slouch tee with silk side paneling, Current/Elliott cargo jeans, concho belt from Brighton (stolen from my mom), Chanel shoes, Hayden Harnett bag out of Brooklyn, vintage Navajo cuff from my grandfather!!

Style Profile...Brigid O'Brien Moore

Name: Brigid O’Brien Moore

Profession: 303 Magazine – Fashion Stylist and Production Assistant. Owner – Totem Pole PR – digital media promotion for music. I promote new indie and underground music to outlets like blogs and online magazines. Costume Party – I am the host of this lovely little blog dedicated to the fashion, music and art that inspires me. Boss Vintage – Fine, fine vintage in Denver. South Broadway ya’ll. Bang! - Delicious restaurant in the Highlands.

How did you get your start? I’ve been very obsessed with fashion and style since I was a little kid, but until a couple years ago, I was sort of ashamed that I didn’t want to be a scientist or do something that would win a Nobel Peace Prize. I’ve found that ultimately, we will make the biggest difference in the world if we all do something that we love and have a passion for. Fashion is an art form and an expression and I’ve learned to put my heart into it. I love to sing (my parents and family are musicians) and I love to sew, so doing something expressive is natural. A few years ago, I worked on a film as a wardrobe assistant and that job led to other wardrobe gigs. I started as a production assistant with 303 Magazine when I moved back to Denver after living in San Francisco, and that has led to small fashion jobs. I am a true believer that you have to make things happen for yourself. If I have to be an entrepreneur or start something on my own, that’s exactly what I’ll do. I’m always looking towards the future.

How would you describe your personal style? Do you have a signature look? A pioneer woman from the 1970’s at a music festival = dresses, layers and mismatched accessories. Simple living.

What fashion magazines/blogs do you love? What inspires you? Street style blogs like Street Smart, The Sartorialist and Facehunter are where I get my best and most valuable inspiration.

Some of my other favorite magazines are Lula, W, Z!nk, Nylon, Vogue, The New Yorker and The New York Times T: Style Magazine. Online, I follow Garance Dore, The Vintage Society, Orchid Grey, Calivintage, The Selby, Oh! You Pretty Things and, of course, the-intersection. I also follow interior design blogs like Apartment Therapy, House of Turquoise and Design Sponge.

Music inspires me a lot. Lately, I’ve been listening to the new Joanna Newsom album Have One On Me, the new Massive Attack called Heligoland, Fever Ray, old Gang Starr, Otis Redding, The Beach Boys, Animal Collective, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Ali Farka Toure, Neko Case and tons of (older) Hot Chip.

Where are your favorite places to shop? I rarely shop because my financial situation is eternally screwed, but when I do, I sometimes like to trade stuff at Buffalo Exchange and I like to shop for vintage at Boss and Regal in Denver and Painted Bird in San Francisco. I like to hunt at Goodwill and ARC (hint: the best finds are in the suburbs = less picked over) and I’m an expert sales digger at regular stores. I also like looking at online shops like Nasty Gal, Papercup Clothing, Stephie Says and random Etsy boutiques. But, if I had an extra 200 bucks to spend, I’d buy new shoes at Strut on 32nd.

What are your current obsessions? Lover dresses. See by Chloe. Rodarte. I want some stacked platform sandals for Spring, new J Brands, lots of vintage sundresses, stripes, caftans, Minnetonka ankle moccasins and grey layers. My favorite decade is the 1970’s, so I’m perpetually on the hunt for (almost) anything from then. Fall collections at this year’s Fashion Weeks have been pretty amazing and I was truly impressed with Madewell by Alexa Chung, RVCA by Erin Wasson, Celine, Alexander McQueen’s final collection, Rebecca Taylor and Mulberry.

Best fashion advice (either to give or received)? It’s all about how you wear it. Being yourself and being comfortable is the most important thing. It’s so very obvious when that’s not the case. One day I’ll feel one way, and then another day I’ll feel like another, so clothes and fashion act as a palette for my emotions, my thoughts and my attitude.

What’s next for you? My man and I are heading to Europe for five weeks this Spring, then I’m moving back to the Bay Area afterwards. I grew up in Denver, and I’ve enjoyed living here again for the past year, but there’s just something about California that brings out the great things in me. I love the beach and the redwoods. My blog will continue and I’ll keep doing fashion-related things, hopefully continue to style photo shoots and shows for whoever wants me (hint, hint, California people…) I like to do window displays and I suddenly have a strong interest in set design, so who knows, maybe I’ll get into that soon. It’s all relevant.

Style Profile - Nigel Penhale

Introducing the illustrious Nigel Penhale...

Occupation/What pays the bills? Crafting communication with colors, graphics, icons, type, emotion, random objects, pictures, film, and anything else needed for the message to be delivered.

How would you describe your personal style? Eclectic. Thrifster-hop with sartorialist-sensibilities. Nonsense with bright color affinities. Thrift-store glam with designer label fantasies.

Style Icons? Andre Benjamin, The Sartorialist, Pharrell, James Dean, Gary Cooper, The Rat Pack

Favorite designers/Brands? Kihachiro Onitsuka, Ralph Lauren, Tom Ford, Bill Blass, Creative Recreation, Imaginary Foundation, FreshJive, Rebel 8, Thom Browne, The Hundreds, Stussy.

Current favorite trend? Shoes.

Personal style quirk? Colors.

The one fashion rule I follow... Rules can bend to aesthetics just as much as aesthetics bend to rules.

I feel most confident wearing... Any outfit I put together that has one element I think people of differing tastes will appreciate. Ultimately, we all fall under some umbrella of style, and I like to keep things interesting by being versatile and outrageous dangerous.

I would never be caught wearing... Ed Hardy.

Most overrated menswear item? This is a tie between Ed Hardy and white belts. Oh, and women’s sunglasses, which, judging from the amount oversized spectacle-steez seen around the Denver Patio & Nightclub scene, are being placed in the men’s sunglasses section, where they are being purchased straightaway by men who’ve come to realize that you can’t drive your M3 at night without that UV protection.

Most underrated menswear item? Headbands.

Most treasured item in your closet? My vintage pink tie. It, like a Klondike ice cream bar, is pretty much irresistible

Best fashion advice? (either received or to give) Dress to your strengths.

I splurge on... Accessories. Shoes, watches, wallets, rings, and my snowboard gear.

Next must have purchase for Fall? A good jacket.

Tech obsession? Zach Morris’ cell-phone.

What do you typically purchase at the Newsstand? Create, Vapors, GQ, Dwell, Details, Juxtapoz, ESPN, Snowboarder, Transworld Snowboarding, Time, Entertainment Weekly.

Favorite cologne/skincare products? Chrome, Burberry Summer.

Favorite fashion-inspiration film? Wes Anderson films have the quirkiest characters and they wear the clothes to match them.

Local Tailor/Stylist? Still looking, recommendations please.

Favorite place(s) to shop? I love to shop online. 80spurple.com and digitalgravel.com are some of my favorites.

Favorite local hangout/coffeeshop? Where my friends are. My favorite shuffleboard table is at The Squire Lounge, my favorite bowling alley is Elitch Lanes. Sputnik, Wazee Supper Club are places I like to drink, as well as Meadowlark. The best place to watch sports is at Brandon’s Pub, they have the most/best TVs without the Brodo-ism.

Favorite neighborhood restaurant? Table Six is ridiculous. GB Fish & Chips have the best Fish & Chips in Denver. Liks has good ice cream. D Bar has dessert like you can’t believe. Barolo Grill, Mizuna, and Solera are always good as well.

Style Profile - Glorianna Schinagl

A little piece I did for the Denver Examiner. Thanks Gigi!

Occupation/What pays the bills? I’ll be attending the business school at CU Denver in the Fall for my degree in marketing, but I currently work part time at Diesel, and I’ve been doing some visual merchandising, help with buying, and retail work for the boutique Red Door Swingin’ in the LoHi neighborhood. I wrote some fashion pieces for www.thisweekindenver.com, and would love to explore something like that again. I’d fancy a little dabbling with wardrobe styling, and I will have a career in branding with an awesome agency someday.

How would you describe your personal style? I would say, feminine with funk. I love heels, heels, heels, and it’s hard to hide my curves so I usually roll with it, wearing figure flattering pieces. I love adding kitschy accessories like little, gold saw earrings with a black suit. Once I wore a vintage concert tee with a vintage, cropped jacket and a turquoise, old lady style box hat to the club.

Style Icons? Kate Moss, Agyness Deyn, Edie Sedgewick, Scarlet Johansen, Gwen Stefani, Rachel Zoe, Patricia Field.

Favorite designers? Oy vey! If only I could afford! BALENCIAGA is my fave!!!! Stella McCartney, Christopher Kane, Biba, Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent, Rodarte, Proenza Schouler, Prada, Corey Lynn Calter, Thakoon and Dries Van Noten!

Current favorite trend? Not much for trends, but I guess I’d say Head Scarves and Gladiator sandals.

Personal style quirk? Off kilter accessories like laser cut, gold acetate ice cream cone earrings I bought in SF at the SFMOMA. Or a little, round, vintage fluorescent orange, peach pin. I love layering thin long sleeved shirts and tees with little jackets in winter versus the sweater thing.

I feel most confident wearing... Dresses that are tight fitting up top, with a fuller skirt, veryCharlotte from SATC. Or, tight jeans and an awesome top.

I would never be caught wearing... Anything with a high waist combined with pleats! I have a large derrière and this just accentuates that in the worst way. Wedges with Capri pants. I have thicker ankles and this is very unflattering as well.

Best fashion advice? (either received or to give) My mother has always told me that you don’t have to be so “match-y, match-y.” You can wear several shades of the same color, maybe even in different patterns, in the right way and it can complement the outfit as a whole. I was watching Jay Leno the other night and he was doing his street interviews and there was an adorable blonde with a cute fuchsia sun dress, but she carried a huge handbag in the exact same color and it was overkill. She would have been stunning if she carried say a canary yellow carry all instead.

I splurge on... Denim, and sunglasses. Diesel and Oliver Peoples girl.

Next must have purchase? A great pair of ankle booties for Fall, and I’m dreaming of a pair of black, knee high, wedge boots from Louis Vuitton. A Rebecca Minkoff handbag!!!

Tech obsession? I don’t own an i-pod or digital camera, and a very savvy business friend just gave me a Blackberry to get organized which has a camera phone on it, that I can barely use. So, I’d say, Facebook and texting.

What do you typically purchase at the Newsstand? I have subscriptions to W and HOW, but I’ll pick up an occasional Vogue, Elle, Oyster, Pop, or ID, or other inspirational issue of a fashion magazine, and Communication Arts quarterly.

Favorite beauty/skincare products? Eeek… I’m pretty lo-ma….I love Dove soap and Eucerine face lotion. I LOVE this perfect shade of lip gloss my boyfriend bought me! It’s from the Drug store, Wet n’ wild, and it’s the perfect nude, bronzie color! When my finances perk up, Kerstase hair products would be a blessing, as well as Yves St. Laurent mascara, which I love!

Most treasured item in your closet? A Gucci purse I splurged on.

Local Tailor/Stylist? I never have things altered. I have long legs fortunately so I never need hemming on pants. I never buy things that don’t fit properly to begin with. I’m my own stylist, but I would say that locally, I do look up to Vanessa Barcus of www.shopgoldyn.com.

Favorite places to shop? Thrift stores, Square One, Diesel, Neiman’s, Garbarini, www.shopgoldyn.com, Common Era, Nordstrom Rack, and vintage stores.

Favorite local hangout/coffeeshop? St. Mark’s on 17th and Race or Barnes and Noble on Colorado Blvd. Tattered Cover downtown, if you can find parking, and Ink Coffee in Riverfront.

Favorite neighborhood restaurant? Sushi Den in Wash Park, Shish Kabob Grill in Capital Hill, and Sabor Latino in Highlands.

*Update: Glorianna's 2010 Style Profile
